Identifying Competitors
Competitor identification in GeoGenie works differently from traditional competitive analysis. In AI search, your competitors aren't just the brands you consider rivals — they're any brand that appears alongside yours (or instead of yours) when AI engines answer questions in your category.
How GeoGenie identifies competitors
ContextGenie surfaces competitor brands as part of its research process. When it maps the personas, topics, and contexts for your brand, it also identifies which other brands appear in AI answers for those same queries.
This means your AI search competitors may include:
- Direct competitors you already know about
- Brands from adjacent categories that AI groups with you
- Niche players you've never heard of that dominate specific sub-queries
- Content publishers or review sites that AI treats as alternatives to brand recommendations
Why AI competitors differ from market competitors
The brands AI engines recommend don't always match your traditional competitive set. AI assembles answers from its training data, retrieval systems, and the citation supply chain — which means a brand with strong content authority in a specific niche can appear more often than a market leader with poor AI visibility.
This creates both a risk and an opportunity. The risk: unknown brands may be displacing you in AI answers. The opportunity: you can identify and target the specific queries where smaller competitors are winning and build content to reclaim those recommendations.
Using competitor data across GeoGenie
Once competitors are identified, their data flows into:
- MonitoringGenie — Share of Voice % shows your brand's mention share relative to competitors across your tracked prompts
- CitationsGenie — reveals which domains are being cited for your competitors vs. your brand, and why certain competitors' content earns citations while yours may not
- ActionsGenie — content briefs are informed by the competitive gaps identified across monitoring and citation analysis
