Main Metrics
GeoGenie tracks three core metrics across all AI platforms (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews). Understanding these metrics is essential to interpreting your dashboards and making GEO decisions.
Visibility %
What it measures: How often your brand appears in AI-generated answers for your tracked prompts.
When someone asks an AI engine a question in your category, Visibility % tells you what percentage of the time your brand is included in the response. This is the most fundamental GEO metric — if your brand isn't appearing in AI answers, nothing else matters.
How to read it:
- Higher Visibility % means AI engines are consistently mentioning your brand when users ask about your category
- Low Visibility % means AI is answering questions about your space without including you — users never see your brand in those conversations
- Track Visibility % at both the topic level and the individual prompt level to understand where you're strong and where you're absent
Share of Voice %
What it measures: Your brand's share of AI mentions relative to competitors.
Share of Voice % tells you how much of the AI conversation in your category belongs to your brand vs. your competitors. Even if your Visibility % is high, a competitor with higher Share of Voice is dominating the recommendation.
How to read it:
- SOV % is a competitive metric — it only has meaning relative to other brands in your space
- If your Visibility % is high but your SOV % is low, it means AI mentions you but mentions competitors more often or more prominently
- Tracking SOV % over time reveals whether you're gaining or losing ground in your category's AI conversation
Citation Rate %
What it measures: How often your content (your domain) is cited as a source in AI-generated answers.
There's a critical difference between being mentioned and being cited. Visibility % tracks whether AI mentions your brand name. Citation Rate % tracks whether AI links back to your actual content as a source. High Citation Rate means AI engines consider your content authoritative enough to reference directly.
How to read it:
- High Visibility % + High Citation Rate % = strong position. AI knows your brand and trusts your content as a source.
- High Visibility % + Low Citation Rate % = a visibility-citation gap. AI knows your brand but doesn't consider your content a primary source. This typically indicates issues with content structure, freshness, or relevance.
- Low Visibility % + Low Citation Rate % = you're absent from the AI conversation entirely. Start with ContextGenie and PromptsGenie to understand the landscape before optimizing content.
How the metrics work together
The three metrics form a diagnostic framework:
- Visibility % answers: 'Does AI know we exist in this category?'
- Share of Voice % answers: 'Are we winning or losing the AI conversation vs. competitors?'
- Citation Rate % answers: 'Does AI trust our content enough to cite it?'
A brand with high Visibility but low Citations has a content authority problem — AI knows the brand but doesn't trust its content. A brand with low Visibility has a discovery problem — the brand needs to appear in more AI conversations first.
MonitoringGenie tracks all three metrics at the prompt and topic level. CitationsGenie provides deeper analysis when you need to understand why your Citation Rate is where it is — specifically, which domains AI is citing instead and what type of sources dominate your category's citation supply chain.
